Mount Sneffels in Afternoon LightMount Sneffels, Colorado This photograph was made in the afternoon while traveling through the San Juan Mountains between Ouray and Telluride. I wasnt chasing drama or waiting on a narrow window of light. I simply wanted to see how Mount Sneffels would hold up when treated plainly, with a longer lens and a single exposure. As Ive leaned more into traditional approaches, Ive found myself reaching for portrait length and telephoto lenses more often.

There are no marked trails and no obvious landmarks

This was one of those nights

The canyon walls visible here are part of a complex geologic history that includes ancient lava flows and sedimentary layers exposed by millions of years of weathering

The blending was done to correct optical limitations and preserve the balance between foreground intensity and background scale

Wildflowers bloom aggressively in the short alpine season

it often reveals itself as a subtle wash of color beneath the stars

they become reference points

The trees hold on where they shouldn’t be able to

something that had not been possible for much of its recent history due to serious instability

and the curve became the entire story

the image includes the trailing structure of the galaxy

but the terrain beyond the main viewpoints quickly becomes less defined
